VERY SCARCE, pay document for REVOLUTIONARY WAR Brigadier General ERASTUS WOLCOTT of Connecticut. Document is dated August 29th 1780 and is boldly SIGNED by Erastus Wolcott on the backside of the document, acknowledging receipt of his pay.

Document reads in FULL, “Sir – Pay Brigadier Gen’l Erastus Wolcott nine Pounds nineteen Shillings and eight Pence Connecticut Currency and charge the State. Pay Table Office August 29th 1780. Samuel Lyman (SIGNED as member of CT Pay Table Committee) Eleazer Wales (SIGNED as member of CT Pay Table Committee) Sam Wyllys (SIGNED as Auditor)”

ERASTUS WOLCOTT (1722 - 1793) was the OLDER brother of the “Declaration of Independence” SIGNER Oliver Wolcott. Born in East Windsor (CT), he served in the colonial legislature and as a local judge prior to the Revolutionary War. He received an appointment in the Connecticut militia in 1775 and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1777. Wolcott was in command of the state’s troops during most of the war, including the garrisons at New London. Following the war, he was named a judge in the Connecticut Supreme Court. CONDITION: document measures about 6 ½ x 8 ¼ inches in size and is in EXCELLENT original condition with dark writing and a bold signature.
