The war effort requiredclothing for the troops. In summer of 1778 Washington had just finished camp atValley Forge no doubt in need of clothing (on his way to New Jersey and Monmouthwhere he chased off the British). Earlier that year (February1778) the Frenchhad officially joined the war from their camp near Hartford in Rhode Island. It’sunclear who these clothes from Winchester Connecticut were for but certainly troops engaged in fighting the British.

The docketed signatures of EzekielWilliams (Connecticut pay table) and seth Hills Winchester Selectman:

Strong support forthe cause of independence seemed to run in this branch of the Williams family. In 1774, Williams led Wethersfield’s effort to provide supplies for blockadedBoston and was elected to the Committee of Correspondence. He also served onthe Committee of Inspection seeking out Loyalist sympathizers and the Committeeof the Pay-Table which audited Connecticut war accounts.

In May 1775, Williamswas one of eleven men appointed to take charge of prisoners of war in the stateand in 1777 he took full charge of such prisoners when he was appointedCommissary of Prisoners. This involved far more that being a jail warden, sincemost imprisoned officers and gentlemen were housed in private homes and wereallowed (on the promise of good behavior or parole) to mingle freely within thecommunity. Williams found safe housing, authorized travel permits, and carriedout prisoner exchanges. He also managed the prison ships on which British and Toryenlisted men were kept.

Seth Hillswas one of Winchester’s ranking Selectman from 1771 until 1783 (12-13 yrs).

All men patriots to the Revolution. Here\'s a great chance to get an original document pertaining to the war with a good war date, for troop supply, at a minor investment.
