While poor health in recent years prevented Tommy Singer from riding his motorcycle as often as he once had, the Arizona weather was perfect on Saturday, May 31, and Tommy decided to take a ride on the reservation. He headed north on Highway 89, and some 85 miles north of Flagstaff in the reservation town of Gap, AZ died in tragic motorcycle accident. Tommy was one of the giants among Native American artists, and the body of his work contributed to the designs and techniques that have been adopted by many artists. Rest in peace, Tommy.

Well-known and highly respected Navajo artist Tommy Singer began his jewelry design career more than 25 years ago and soon gained quite a reputation for his amazing and innovative chip inlay work which are today collector’s items. That’s the good news.

The bad news was that the immense popularity of this art form literally brought a flood of cheap, inferior Taiwanese imports that soon became popular in southwestern tourist areas, and Tommy was wiped out.

So Tommy dusted himself off, taught himself some new skills, and began making a wide array of distinctively styled overlay pieces that are considered collectors items. But it’s his higher end turquoise treasure necklaces, fabulous silver and gold necklaces, near life -sized pendant, and his huge bracelets with his unique overlay work -- sterling silver and gold fill or all-sterling -- that have earned him a large and loyal following because of their quality craftsmanship and superlative design.

A few years ago, however, it became apparent to me that Tommy\'s health was declining so bought more than $100,000 worth of genuine inventory. Sadly, however, recently Tommy\'s advancing age and health problems caused him to sell his name or \'brand\' and rights to his designs to a Texas import firm whose company name suggests they buy or sell spying equipment. In any case, this company doesn\'t seem to have any apparent connection to or understanding of the Native American jewelry trade. Therefore, when my extensive inventory of real Tommy Singer pieces is exhausted, I won\'t be carrying the Tommy Singer \'brand\' any more.

The men\'s bracelet honors the free spirit descendants of the horses Coronado brought with him to the American southwest in the mid 16th century -- the wild horses that still roam the west and southwest today some four and a half centuries later.

This cuff style bracelet features a small herd of four overlaid sterling silver horses galloping among blooming yuccas and cactus of the desert landscape and across an oxidized (darkened) and reticulated (textured) sterling silver silver background and two hand engraved puffy cloud formations overhead.

Overlay is basically two or more bonded layers of pure sterling silver, and it has its origins in the late 1930s when the University of Northern Arizona at Flagstaff, AZ wanted to assist Hopi silversmiths to develop a unique jewelry style that would differentiate their work from that of the Navajos. This rather large scale project had barely begun when WWII began so little was accomplished until after the war was over.

This domed cuff style bracelet is nearly 1 and 1/8th\" wide from terminal to terminal. It has an inside measurement of 6 and 3/8ths\" with an easily adjustable opening gap of 1 and 3/8ths\" opening gap. If your wrist is 7½\" to 8\" in circumference, this should fit with or no careful adjustment of the shanks and/or terminals.

One of Tommy\'s hallmarks (THOMAS SINGER in condensed gothic caital letters) is one the back of the bracelet on the inside surface.

Gilbert Tom\'s hallmarlk and sterling stamp are on the back.
