Robot Odyssey is a coming-of-age tale of a robot trying to find his place in the universe. The universe he lives in is one of danger and excitement. The game creates an excellent atmosphere featuring evil red shapes that resemble monsters and evil blue shapes that resemble robots. So the graphics are great and the story is superb. But really, in the end it comes down to gameplay.Thankfully the gameplay excels as well. The game spans dozens of levels, most of which take place in space. You control the unnamed robot hero who battles monsters and evil robots. The controls are fairly simple, you move and you shoot. The game isn\'t particularly difficult, but the entire time you are having fun. The AI isn\'t too sharp, it mostly moves left and right shooting at you. The trick isn\'t merely killing the fiends, it is killing multiple packs of them at a time. The game starts off slow and simple, yet as the levels go soon you are in a fight for survival. You have a couple of options for weapons, most of which basically have the same function of murdering things. Your primary weapon is a blue laser beam. This serves you from the start of the game till the end. Along the way you pick up a more advanced red laser beam which fires multiple shots. There is also a rare orange beam. This baby eliminates all enemies currently on the screen. Overall the gameplay is basic, but it is enjoyable nonetheless. The music is of high quality. Sometimes I start up the game just to listen to the music alone and forget all of my sorrows. It gives me an uplifting feeling that makes the rest of my day much more manageable. Multiple songs for each level give the game an epic feel. It is so amazing that I am sad the soundtrack is not available for download anywhere. The sound effects are realistic, from the beeps of an exploding robot to the boops of a dieing monster. Top notch stuff.
Robot Odyssey is an underrated game for an underrated system. It is fairly hard to find, but if you manage to get this jewel, it will be a wise purchase indeed. Earns a 9/10
