Royal Doulton 1905 Isaac Walton Seriesware Fisherman Punch Bowl Signed Noke Very Rare
I am pleased to present for sale this very large and very rare hand painted Royal Doulton England #D2704 Punch, Wassail Bowl or simply a wash basin in the Gallent Fisherman Isaac Walton Seriesware line. Designed By famous artist designer and potter Charles Noke (1858-1941) this piece bears his signature on the inside. It also carries on the back the earliest Walton Royal Doulton backstamp which dates this to around 1905 or first year.It may be the only one in existence and a prototype that failed to produce more. The reason possibly being that it does have some manufacturing glaze anomalies and a few firing faults. For a very short period Doulton made this tableware showing six 17th century able fishermen(one with peg leg)and each piece had some form of a poem. The poem on the rim of this bowlin darkgreen reads “THERE STOOD MY FRIEND,WITH PATIENT SKILL ATTENDING OF HIS TREMBLING QUILL,FRIEND WHO IS MORE WELCOME TO MY DISH THEN TO MY ANGLE WAS MY FISH. BUT YET, THOUGH WHILE I FISH I FAST.I MAKE GOOD FORTUNE MY REPAST\".The Isaac (Izsak) Walton fisherman seies is based on the 1653 book the Compleat Angler written by Walton.These 6 brown and green fisherman on the bowl also have a dark green tree lined inside border with a green outside rim andthe poem running along the outside rim. This is typical of the earliest series ware. The later seriesware mainly used lighter green borders.This piece is being sold as is meaning as pictured and described in this sale. I have tried to show most of its defects and flaws in pictures so please view all my pictures. In overall very nice used condition with makerfiringand glaze defects.It does have usage scratches and a small amount of paint and glaze wear to 3 of the figures and the inside green paint as shown. I do not see any chips,cracks or repairs. There is also as on most of these earthenware pieces some light age crazing.About 15” in diameter this bowl is 15”W x 15”W x 6 ½”D. This piece is being sold as is meaning as pictured and described in this sale.I highly recommend this for a Royal Douton collector of rare unusual one of a kind pieces.Makes agreat conversation piece for a home or office.As always good luck and happy buying.
