What began as a business specializing in stoneware, water filters, piping, and , has grown to include many different types of bone china figurines and sought after pieces. The Doulton company was founded by John Doulton in 1815 in London, England.  They maneuvered from basic stoneware to experimenting with decorative stoneware using glazes and other effects beginning in 1854.  By 1871, John Doulton’s son, Henry created an art studio that let art students come and produce new designs for the company.  He was also responsible for the new innovative steam driven potter’s wheel, which put the company about 10 years in front of their competitors.

The turning point for Royal Doulton was their move to “The Potteries” area in Burslem, Staffordshire, where John Slater, Doulton’s Art Director, noted the trend in bone china.  Noting this demand for prized porcelain pieces, he aggressively looked into moving into this line of pottery.   By 1885, they were producing for international clientele and in 1901, and in 1901 King Edward VII gave their factory the Royal Warrant and permitted them the use of “Royal” into their name, thus birthing the new and classic Royal Doulton.

Presently, there are thousands of cherished pieces available and are actively collected by many.  They also have a wide range of pieces including jewelry, dinnerware, glassware, linens, and gift trinkets.  To this day, Royal Doulton remains one of the most world famous china companies.  Browse our selection and ask us if there are any you are looking for, but may not see listed.
