OldCenturyBooks store A rare Royal Doulton cabinet plate design number D 4625 THE WILTSHIRE MOONRAKERS, the design number indicates the plate was in production between 1926 and 1946.The scene depicts two country \" bumpkins\" up to no good and on being approached by a Government Excise man profess to be raking from the water a cheese which is clearly a reflection of the moon. The story I was told as a young lad was that the Excise man is fooled by their actions and goes about his business whereupon the \"Bumpkins\" retrieve the contraband from the water where they had hidden it earlier. Their actions are reflected by the four line poem on the reverse of the plate which reads
\"Down Vizes way in days of old.The Sizemen then were proper sold.To see a crazy headed loon.Rake at the shadder of the moon.\"\" Vizes\" refers to the Wiltshire County Town of Devizes.
The plate is in good condition free of cracks or repairs, there is one flake of glaze missing under the rim and not visible under normal circumstances also a degree of age crazing to the glaze, both points are illustrated in photo number 5.
