Royal Geographical Society Silver Map Sterling Silver GOLD Franklin Mint UK VERS Description

\'The Royal Geographical Society Silver Map\', a sterling silver map of the world, engraved in a 18th century manner. The map is contained within a gilt metal strapwork border, hallmarked, 37cm x 56cm, framed. The Franklin Mint/John Pinches RGS Silver Map was released in limited amounts only in 1976 and were slightly different depending on what part of the world you lived in. This is a rare UK copy created by John Pinches Limited (Which the Franklin Mint bought out in 1969) and has a sterling mark on the lower right hand side and the John Pinches metal stamps into the silver map. You won\'t find the Sterling Mark or the stamps on the USA versions or other versions since those were created by the Franklin Mint and not John Pinches Limited. These are much harder to find and also comes with the promotional letters from 1976.

The Franklin Mint marketed these particular versions to the UK members of the Royal Geographical Society only and all were made of sterling silver and 24 kt leaf gold. All of the RGS Silver Maps sold out regardless of Country. The Franklin Mint and RGS would let each member buy only one copy. You couldn\'t buy two or more to hoard them. The sterling silver maps are heavy also. The RGS never sold the Silver Map for weight, but as a piece of art work, as a Sterling Silver Map adorned with 24kt gold at the edges as scroll work.

The MAPS LOOK AMAZING. THE DETAILS OF THE WORLD ARE GREAT TO JUST STARE OUT. RGS and John Pinches Limited OUTDID THEMSELVES.

I\'m selling this is as a piece of artwork and not as scrap or for it\'s silver/gold value. PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER MELTING THIS RARE ARTWORK DOWN. The original pieces were sold back in 1976 for around $750.00 when the materials to create it were worth much less. This particular copy is framed in heavy wood and the backing is screwed to the frame and is ready to be hung on your favorite wall as a show piece. The wood frame has some very light marks or dings, and the back part of the frame has some dings also, (the map could be cleaned by removing the screws and backing and wiped down with a lint free cloth). These part will face the wall of course. The front has minor wear and is very hard to see. I have NOT opened the map and considering how clean this item is, I see no reason to do so. It\'s one of the nicest copies I\'ve ever had. See our photos. I give more photos then anyone on .

I\'m assuming you are buying for this not just for the silver/gold content but for what is a rare and limited collectible for its art sake. The map is amazing in detail. The RGS seriously cared about the look of this map and it\'s fast sell out to the RGS members tells. Recent sales are still strong for the better condition maps as more and more people find out just how collectible and limited these maps truly are and how nice a piece of artwork they are hanging on the walls of their homes.

Note about silver and sterling silver. Silver is normally sold at .999 pure. Sterling silver is .935 pure. A very minor difference. We\'ve seen silver pop just a few months ago to $40.00 and back down again but the stock market can\'t stay high in it\'s bubble forever and when it does, Silver will increase in value in my opinion. Gold and Silver will pop again. It\'s just a matter of time. This is a great way to buy silver, gold and art at the same time. You are getting a limited and unique item from the RGS.

Previous sale: Noble sales sold one also but sales have been higher. [link removed by ] Nobles copy was in my opinion, made for the Australian market and was made by the Franklin Mint of Australia. Please do your own homework. You are buying an original Limited edition, RGS Silver Map and what you are seeing in the pictures is what you are getting. Nothing more or less. Noble has some misinformation in the weight, where they gave the total weight of the item but marked it as total weight of the silver and gold. That would be a mistake. You don\'t see a lot of UK Silver Maps come to sale. I\'m assuming most people are holding on to them for many collectible good reasons and I don\'t expect anyone to resell them until it becomes an estate issue. Please email us with any questions. Also, if you have more information, we\'ll be glad to post it.
