RUSSIAN IMPERIAL ZLATOUST SHASHKA/SWORD 1917 WWI:
$1500.00

This style of Shashka was used by Cossack cavalry. It was also used by other kinds of Russian Army troops. Good condition. Made in 1917.
The shashka is 37 7/8\" long, 38 7/8\" with scabbard. Blade length 31 3/4\". Sword and handle (comprised of carved wood and brass) feel solid. Handle has multicolored tassels attached.
Markings:
Hand guard facing right:
Handle is stamped \"A\" on brass just above wood, and \"A\" again (with a little crown above it) on the brass part just below the blade.
Blade is stamped at base with \"A\", \"A\" with crown, and the number 140.
Hand guard facing left:Blade is stamped \"1917r\" and a Russian eagle with Russian text in a circle that I believe indicates the location of manufacture - Zlatoust.
Brass just below blade is also stamped with Russian writing that I can\'t make out.
Scabbard:Wooden interior wrapped in leather with brass fittings - tip, mouth, and two fixtures for straps. Brass at mouth is stamped \"1210\" and \"A\". The strap fixtures are also stamped with the letter \"A\". There is a hand-sewn ribbon attached via a brass ring. The ribbon, faded red, has gold braid and what looks like a silver loop near one end.
Free shipping via UPS ground from Yonkers, NY 10705. If you prefer to pick it up in person that\'s fine too.

Having talked with some interested collectors, I\'ve learned a bit more about the sword:
Upon close inspection of the blade one can see a dozen or so tiny nicks in it. This probably means that it saw service, likely in WW1.
The blade hasn\'t been sharpened using modern tools (bench grinder, etc), as the tone and color of the blade is uniform. It doesn\'t look like modern scouring powder or polish has been applied either.
The mounts on the scabbard are for a four-sided bayonet favored by Russian manufacturers of the period.
I\'ll ship UPS with value specified, signature required and (of course) tracking.
Finally, I forgot to mention where the sword came from. My father bought it from an antique dealer in Washington DC in the 1970\'s. That\'s all I know.
