Russian Solid Silver YAD (Torah Pointer) Dated 1857- 88 grams :
$136.77
This sale is for a Russian Solid Silver YAD or Torah Pointer which is fully Russian hallmarked for Moscow 1857; it is 330 mm in length and weighs 88 grams with no internal weighting, even the mounting ring is hallmarked. This YAD (or hand) is quite plain for a Saltykov, it is also quite large. The style suggests a scholar or ‘learned’ person rather than a layman and it is engraved with what I understand to be a version of Hebrew (?).
The engravings and stamped hallmarks are very clear and it is in very good condition; although Torah pointers are not an every-day used item, just a few hours a week, plus High Days etc.
Unfortunately I do not know enough about the symbolism of the YAD, such as the gauntlet rather than a plain hand, or the ring on the finger, or the eagle, or even the writing on it. However, it is a very attractive and substantial piece of high grade silver (875 / 1000) which is about 6% less than Sterling Silver.
I actually have no idea of its value as it was passed to me from a family member, (my wife\'s grandmother was Russian and fled to England around the end of the 19th century).
I carried out some research regarding the hallmarks and came up with the following:Maker: HC (H is actually a revers N) Ivan Saltykov Snr (not the more famous Jnr)Assay Office: Symbol for Moscow (1841 to 1899ish)Assayer: A K - Andrey Antononovitch KavalskyDate: 1857Standard: 84 – 0.875 / 1000.
Please review all the pics as they describe the item better than I can and you are welcome to collect it from FY7.
International postage is about £12 and is usually only insured to the official point of entry into the recipient’s country. This is due to the huge amount of \'missing\' items in certain countries.
