The Icon of the Mother of Godof Kazan made its apparition on 1579 at Kazan the capital ofTartar Khaganat recently captured by the Russians. The iconography subject isclosely associated with a Greek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. By thisIcon young people are blessed at the altar. The feasts were established on 22October (5 November) and 8 (21) July.

This Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional churchartist at the Russian town Yaroslavl (not farfrom Moscow)that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

The icon was painted on a wooden board covered with levkas (gesso,special priming). It was painted then with egg tempera and gold paints that usethe small parts of leaf gold. Enamel paints were also used. They create arelief ornament. The style is traditional and strictly follows antique canonsof the icon painting.

There are twooriginal wooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from wrapping.

Size = 10.4x9.3x1.1 (26.5x23.5x2.8 cm). Weight = 771 gr.
