Saint John the Precursor or the Baptist as he is known inWestern Christianity is depicted in the iconography type of the Angel ofDesert. Saint John can be portrayed in several ways. In a tradition originating inByzantine art, John can be shown with angel\'s wings as the Angel of the Desertsince both the saint and angels are messengers. He is the forerunner or precursor of Christ andforms a link between the Old and New Testaments. He is considered the last ofthe Old Testament prophets and the first of the saints of the New Testament inwhich his story is told—a link between the two.

This modern Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professionalchurch artist at the Russian town Rybinsk (not far from Moscow) that is one of the main and oldcenters of the Russian icon painting.

The icon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.) wooden board coveredwith levkas (gesso, special priming) with egg tempera and gold paints that usethe small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly followsantique canons of the icon painting.

Size = 15.6x11.2x1.1 (39.5x28.5x2.8 cm). Weight = 1750 gr.
