Original artwork, titled Captain Bobblesnout hasfriction with his crew members, by legendary underground cartoonist S. ClayWilson (1941- ). This is an extremely substantial and significant museumcaliber piece. Signed and dated by the artist (\"S. Clay Wilson 2006\")in the upper left corner. The graphic image, executed in India ink onStrathmore Bristol Smooth, pictures a pirate captain using his cutlass to splitopen the head of one if his crew members, who has already been disemboweled andhad one leg cut off. This is one of Wilson\'s last artworks and it has avery special history and provenance: This piece was personally submitted byWilson for display at La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, California, for aspecial two-part exhibit held in celebration of the gallery\'s 25th anniversaryin 2011. In conjunction with the exhibit, La Luz de Jesus Gallery published a278 page hardcover book, titled La Luz De Jesus The Little Gallery That Could(La Luz De Jesus Press, 2001), that featured all of the artwork from that 25thanniversary exhibit, including the offered Wilson artwork. S. Clay Wilson, whose work regularly appeared inZap Comix, was one of the leading figures in the underground comics movementand his artwork often features scenes of graphic violence and sex. Wilsonstopped drawing approximately two years after hesuffered a debilitating brain injury that adversely affected his career. (Thecause of his injury has never been determined, but it appears that he was attackedand beaten after leaving a friend\'s house in San Francisco. Wilson was in acoma for many days and remembered nothing when he regained consciousness. As aresult of his injury, he is now severely limited in his physical abilities.) Although the artwork is dated 2006, his wife, Lorraine Chamberlain, represents that it was drawn in 2008 while Mr. Wilson was recovering from injuries in the hospital. The artis 9.5 x 8 inches (image area) and remains in Near Mint condition. It has been matted and framed to dimensions of 15.25 x 12.25 inches.
