Dimensions: 139.5 x 184 cm Mounted in ebonized wooden frame: 147 x 192,5 cm
Good condition
Tileman was a respected portrait painter who created a portrait of Emperor Ferdinand III in Vienna, among others
Simon Tileman is especially recorded for his portraits in Bremen and genre scenes in Kassel. From 1639 to 1645, he lived in Utrecht, so that the subsequent portraits feature an influence of the Dutch tradition.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition, according to age. The paint surface has darkened somewhat and shows craquelure, abrasion and pressure marks from the stretcher. The inspection under UV light shows scattered old strokes of retouching throughout the depicition. There are several patches on the reverse. The frame has signs of wear and traces of an inactive woodworm infestation. The dimensions are 139.5 x 184 cm, and the frame measures 147 x 192.5 cm.
Simon Peter Tileman (1601-ca. 1667/70/88)
Simon Peter Tileman, also called ‘Schenck’ or ‘Tilemann-Schenck’ was born in Lemgo and settled with his family to Bremen in 1614. After sojourning in the Netherlands, the Rhineland, Bohemia and Italy he settled in Bremen in 1633, painting portraits, but also some allegorical scenes. In addition, he created copper engravings. Works of the painter can be found at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Kassel, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the Kunsthalle Bremen.
