Rareand Large Meiji Japanese Sumida Gawa Relief Monkey Flask Vase w/Tomobako.

Brand/Provenance: Sumida Gawa, Japan.

Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912).

Size: The piece measures 30.5cm (12\") in height x 26cm in width.

Artist/signature: The piece is double signed \"Inoue Ryosai\" to the body and an impressed seal to the base.

Condition: The piece is in excellent condition with NO chips, cracks or restoration. There are some patches of red paint wear which could be touched up if desired.

Comments: A fine Japanese Sumida Gawa figural relief drip glaze flask vase, dating from the Meiji Period. The piece is exquisitely decorated on two sides, the first depicting Monkeys parading over a large bridge. Some are climbing up the sides from a boat in the stream below and otherwait on the sidelines. A temple is being carried in the middle, mostlikely with an Empress Inside. The reverse sidedepicts two Monkeys dressed as Foo Lion scaring a smallgroup of others away. Another Monkey plays a Taiko drum to makesound noise and dramatise the situation. A rich drip glaze trickles down the top with shades of brown andpurple. Comes with an original fitted Tomobako Box.
