SIXTH PLATE RUBY AMBROTYPE OF 1850S HOBO:
$165.00

This sale is for a ruby ambrotype of a remarkable character seated on a chair holding his broom handle with a large knapsack tied at the end.  He is wearing an unusual-shaped hat with a high crown with a very wide brim which has been turned up around all sides of the hat.  He is dressed in boldly-striped trousers, has the cuffs turned back on his shirtsleeves, and he has a somewhat furtive expression on his face.  The plate was evidently uncased for a long time, because numerous small scratches in the plate emulsion appear all over the surface.  Still, for a 19th century character portrait, it is hard to beat this ambrotype for straightforwardness of expression and historical significance.  The portrait has been resealed with a new cover glass, and resides in a half embossed leather-over-wood case that is missing the bottom rail.  Make this unique beauty yours with your winning offer!  Foreign buyers will pay more for shipping than the price given in the sale description.
