Tradition objects during Ife bronze back to the 14th century. Many heads and bronze statues created by artists from Benin were reserved for the exclusive use of residents of the royal palace, and most often placed on altars each new Oba. These altars were topped rectangular shaped heads, statues, carved ivory tusks, bells and sticks. They served to commemorate oba and contact its mind.
