Small mid 19th century sampler by Ellen Plant - 1852. Worked in wool on a soft weave canvas, this sampler is completely charming. The centre of the canvas is stitched with a garden setting in which two young girls are sitting on the grass, one holding a stick in her hand, ready to throw for their pet dog who stand at her side. Ellen\'s name is stitched above this charming tableau whilst the date of 1852 is stitched below. Each corner is stitched with a floral swag and the whole thing is then surrounded by a meandering floral border.The canvas has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite dark but with an arc under the grassed area, running through the date which is paler than the rest of the canvas. It is also lighter around the edges where it has been over a stretcher for a considerable period of time. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ellen first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the canvas where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher at some point of time. Measures 14 1/4 \" x 12\"
