$3.55

Foryour consideration is a stunning SOLID SILVER STAMP, in rare MINTcondition, based on the original issued within the CANAL ZONE duringc1962. This beautifully crafted \"FOUR-CENT THATCHER BRIDGEERROR\", exacted to the finest exquisite detail and measuring16mm x 10mm, is one of the world’s greatest stamps and a wonderfulcollectors item or gift for a STAMP or SILVER enthusiast. On October12th, 1962, a four-cent commemorative stamp was scheduled forissuance by the Canal Zone to mark the opening of the Thatcher FerryBridge spanning the Panama Canal. The design, depicting the linkingof the two continents, was to be in black ink with the bridgesuperimposed in silver. During the printing process, one sheet stuckto the sheet above it and consequently missed the silver imprint ofthe bridge design. One pane of the sheet was discovered by H E Harrisand Company of Boston, Massachusetts. The Canal Zone PostalAdministration decided on an intentional printing of the error stampsbut Harris filed suit against them seeking a preliminary andpermanent injunction against the reprinting of this error. Threeyears later, Harris was successful. It was ruled that the Canal Zonehad no lawful right to deliberately issue misprinted stamps merely tolower the price of philatelic rarities, and that to destroy the valueof a citizen\'s property amounted to taking it without compensationand denying the citizen equal protection of the laws. Harrissubsequently received the American Philatelic Society\'s John LuffAward for his efforts to protect the interests of the stampcollector. In 1980, a plate block of ten was purchased for $130,000.Catalogue value in 1983 for single copies, known only unused, were$10,000.

Thestamp weighs between 1-2 grammes and is shown next to a £1 coin foran idea of scale.
