SPECTACULAR ANTIQUEJAPANESE IMARIBOWL

Edo / MeijiPeriod,1800s

Bold andexquisite detailadorns thislarge, exquisite quality antique Imari bowl. Hand painted underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels, rendered in superb, minute detail. The central roundel features a sage, deep in thought as he admires the natural beauty of his remote mountain hermitage. A bird flies overhead to greet him as he looks on holding his walking staff. Flowering trees surround his abode and stylized mountains soar in the distance. Surrounding the central image, a band of beautiful golden botanicals catches the light in splendid fashion. The bowl is further adorned on the inside and outside of the rim with highly intricate flowers, vines, and stylized brocades in the highest traditional Japanese nishikide fashion. The entirety creates a superb bowl that is both vibrant and lively, and also somehow harmonious and tranquil. A great feat!

Of significant size, measuring approximately 9.5\" across and 3.25\" tall. Dates to the late Edo / Early Meiji Period, 1800s. Would have graced the table of a wealthy family, and probably only been used for serving special guests. Thus, the bowlis in excellent antique condition, appearing to have been barely used, and carefully stored for over 120 years bythe generations of fortunate owners. The underside is also lovely in a pureway, the white porcelain encircled with elegant underglaze blue patterning around the double foot ring. The crosses may be representative of secret Kakure Kirishitan. A superb example of the finery found in thehomesof wealthy families of 19th century Japan. Would make a wonderful addition for the connoisseur of world class Japanese antiques.
