STERLING SILVER LOCK DOWN INKWELL VICTORIAN ORNATE TRAVELLING TRAVELLERS DESK:

This is for a fabulous old Victorian cut glass lock down sterling silvertravelling inkwell from 1856. It has a lock down hinged lidwhich is finely engraved around the top rims, the side and on the key. Thescrew key locks the lid down to the base, and when tightthe lid is sealed with thered leather seal on the underside that is held with its original hallmarked silver disc.All this allowing safe transit for the inkwell and no spilt ink ! It is hallmarked in several placesover all the silver and with full English sterling silver hallmarks that date it to London1856 along with a makers mark JHforJohn Harris.The glass is also beautifully cut into deep gothic arches that show a flower silhouette on the base. It is in excellent clean condition with no splits or holes in the silver and no dents, holessplits or repairs...even the leather seal is all totallyintact and original. There is one tiny little nick to one edge of the glass at the base, but thats allit is nothing at all and does not detract. Itis a very nice, very well made and very showy oldinkwelland it would grace any collection.The base measures 38mm (1.5\") in diameter by 40mm (1.75\") high.
