Description:

This is the original art (pen and ink) drawn by Milt Caniff for the Steve Canyon daily comic strip published on April 10, 1979. The illustration board/paper size is approximately 20.5\" by 6.5\". The strip is signed \"Milton Caniff\"and hand dated \"4/10\". Copyright Field Enterprises, Inc. as per the indicia. This is NOT a stat or a proof of the art.

This daily features Poteet Canyon (Steve\'s former ward and possibly long-lost cousin whowas one of the beautiful women who haunted Caniff\'s strips; Poteet wasoriginally a Lolita-like character who always had a thingfor Steve) working undercover in Cooper Calhoun\'smansion. She istrying to determine if Mrs. Canyon (Steve\'s wife or ex-wife; I recall them separating at one point, but cannot recall if they ever actually divorced) is being held prisoner in thebomb shelter of the house. Poteet has assumedthe role of \"Helen Elm\" ahouse maid (possibly with a shady or criminal past) working under the directionof Cookie and Mrs. Hence. Here, Poteet has returned tothe basement via dumbwaiter, with a key that she lifted, and hopes to find the door that it fits.In the final panel, Poteet finally hears a new voice, though it doesn\'t sound like Mrs. Canyon.Sounds more like a drunken sailor. Could this be the mystery prisoner?

Wonderful panel design and framing and outstanding inks, particularly in the shadows and dark backgroundsthroughout.Awesome shadowy second panel. Great contrast of light and darkness (actual and metaphorical). Just brilliant work by one of the all-time greats.

Strip and Artist Information:

STEVE CANYON was an American adventure comic strip which ran from 1947 through 1988. The title character was a pilot, adventurer and military officer and investigator. Created and drawn by Milt Caniff (1907-1988), who is known as \'the Rembrandt of the comic strip\' for his spectacular artwork on Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon. Caniffhas influenced generations of comic artists (his influence really cannot be overstated), and was a pioneer in the use of cinematic staging incomic strips andin the use of impressionistic inking (often referred to as \'action blacks\'). He is deemed to be one of the \'big three\' ofAmerican adventure stripartists (along with Alex Raymond and Hal Foster). He was twice awarded the NCS ReubenAward.

Theart is in overall excellent condition on illustration board.Touched up (with white out) stat oflower half of Poteet, shelf and lower part of wallin first panel.Original drawing can be seen beneath. No other stats or paste-overs. Word balloon corrections to first and third panels. Moderate to heavy white-out corrections throughout. Minor spots and stains.Ownedby an adult collector in a smoke free home.
