This is an excellent find of a very nice, working, large, hand carved, 8 day cuckoo clock with a rare 3 bird case design that was created in the Black Forest of \"Germany\" about 65 years ago by the \"Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company,\" you don\'t get any more original than that! Actually the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company did a great deal to popularize the cuckoo clock since they were very quick to mobilize right after WWII and did all they could to get their clocks into the hands of returning GI\'s following the war. May Dad brought one home and I remember it to this day. The clock is very high quality, just gorgeous on display, and has a remarkable mahogany finish; very nice! The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The front is adorned with seven large, hand carved grape leaves and another grape leaf is found on thewooden pendulum itself. There is alarge, carved, wooden bird, a cuckoo I suspect, on either side of the dial staring upward with their amber eyes at an equally impressive, large, carved, wooden bird atopthe clock looking as though he\'s ready to take flight. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to pointout the time. The phrase, \"8 Day\" appears in goldtone script just above the dial. There is a hinged wooden door on the right side of the clock that is secured with a brass metal hasp. It opens to allow access to the front of the movement in case any adjustments are necessary from that end. The case has a wooden back door with the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company name and is secured with a metal latch. The back removes easily to allow access to the weight driven, mechanical, 8 day movement produced by \"Regula.\" Aweight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. Regula makes the best movements and CCMC used them in all of their high end clocks. The wooden bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound goodtoo! At the bottom of each hour, the small wooden door above the dialopens and a colorful bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled metal chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. Thecuckoo bird comes out again at the top of each hour and correctlycuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside theclock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos beautifully as well. Keep in mind that this is an old clock and we don\'t know the service history though I did find three service dates inscribed on the inside of the back door...the latest is 6-25-13; looks to have been well cared for over the years. Nonetheless, someadjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its newhome. We always advise our clock customers to service their antiqueor vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will turn aclassic like this one into a family heirloom in years to come. I\'velooked the clock over fairly well and can\'t find any missing pieces, damage, and just little signs of use. It is a very impressive clock and equally so in size too measuring about 13 1/2\" or so high (not counting theweights or pendulum), about 6\" at is deepest point, and about 10\" across the top. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clockwould be a welcome addition to any collection and is certain to please you as well as capture the imagination of any guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a gorgeous, rare Black Forest timepiece with a wonderful history behind it. offer with confidence; I have no doubt that you will absolutely love this clock!
