For your consideration is presented a late 18thc Chinese deeply carved cinnabar lacquer circular covered box depicting Scholars in garden and outdoor scenes equally worked to both sides. This early cinnabar lacquer box was produced in Canton, China sometime in the last quarter of the 18thc for the export market. This fabulous box contains a set of numbers 0382 inside the top section which are either a inventory number from a museum or a private collectors number, but either way it is surely a well done early produced cinnabar box. This particular box is very deep in relief carving suggesting between 300 to 350 or possibly more individual coats of lacquer were applied in order to build up this kind of depth for the carver toachieve this 3D appearance. Each side is equally carved depicting to one side a Scholar with attendant walking through a mountainous landscape and the opposite side shows several Scholars with attendant amoungst a garden setting complete with buildings. The cinnabar is of a deep red color as many of these early boxes do have and the inside is finished with a high sheen black lacquer and almost always these covered boxes from the 18thc and earlier will have a orangish red inner lippings with the bottom half having a raised lip that fits into the top section and is metal which I would say the carcass is made of metal as well and lacquered over. Condition is very good with some expected age/surface wear along with some touch ups to the geometric background and some wear to the outside rims of both halves with only a small amount of lacquer wear to the inside lippings and the only repair I seen other than touch ups is on the top edge of the top half at the rim otherwise it is in much better shape than most you will see and there is some dust in the cracks and crevices but again a superbly crafted box.
