VERY EARLY ANTIQUE TURKISH CICIM (Jijim) RUG, southwestern Anatolia on theMediterraneancoast, 18th century, and, for its very early age, it comesin a relatively goodstate of preservation and is now clean and museum conserved for the collector. The exact size, not including the backing, is: 3\'-4\" x 4\'-11\" (102 x 150 cm).The town of Antalya was founded around 200 B.C. and was an important port during the Roman era. This rather rare, early antique, museum quality Antalya region specimen comes fresh to the marketfrom recent source acquisition. It is all wool in construction with the white designs executed in natural ivory cotton. The old time dyes are gloriously rich, especially the gold field designs and blue-greens in the two \"Seljuk star\" box medallions. The technique employed to create these beautiful flat weave designs is called variously: Cicim, Jijim, Djidjim, and Jajim. To this day in Turkey the term is designated for flat-woven rugs employing brocade structures and warp-pattered weaves like the present offering. Note that this very old flat-weave retains areas of the original side cord over-castingsand varying degrees of the original plain-weave end finishes. The textile has been professionally cleaned to museum standards andmeticulouslysewn and conserved to a warm terra-cotta red linen backing for the sake of posterity and to save the new owner from having to put out any extra added expenses.
