This is a superb Staffordshire seated spaniel dog with the large spill vase to the rear, of which:

During our research we have been informed it certainlydates from the 19th century.

Dates about c1880.

Confirms the date of c1880.

Text: the only model of a comforter spaniel which supports a large spill vase.

Spill vases were used to hold long spills of rolled paper to light additional fires or pipes etc from an already lit fireplace. In the early days matches were expensive.

A wonderful portrayal of the seated spaniel dog with:

the white & gilt decoration and superb facial detailing.

Gilt collar & lock with hand decorated face.

To the rear: the large spill vase.

Pottery.

Seated on the decorative hollow base.

It has an overall height of about 13.5inches.

Basesize ofabout 6.75 x 3.5inches.

Condition: Considering the age: the overall condition is excellent with no major blemishes.

Due to age: minor areas of loss of colour with areas of fine crazing.
