Here is a Fine and Rare Early Georgian Silver “Pap Boat” or Invalid Feeder, of Distinctive Shape
Made in London in 1773 in Fully Hallmarked English Sterling Silver by a Silversmith with the Maker’s Mark “WS”
Probably William Sudell
It is in Excellent Condition with no Engraving

Here is a fine and rare early Georgian Silver Pap Boat used to feed invalids and children, in classic boat shape, with a distinctive raised pointed rear rim.

This fine piece was made in 1773 in London in fully hallmarked English Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks are rubbed, and not easily photographed, but are quite readable.

The maker’s mark is the initials “WS” most probably for the noted silversmith William Sudell of 3 Monkwell Street, London.

This Pap Boat is overall in excellent condition, with no damage or significant dents, only light signs of normal wear and usage, and no engraving.

The Pap Boat is four and a half inches long (4.5 ins / 11.0 cms) and stands about one and a half inches high (1.5 ins / 3.5 cms). It weighs a little under two ounces (1.8 ounces / 50 grams) of hallmarked Georgian silver.

The hallmarks shown above are the maker’s mark, a Gothic letter “S” the date letter for 1773-1774, the crowned leopard’s head town mark for London and the lion passant guarantee mark for English sterling silver.

The maker’s mark is rubbed, but decipherable, as the initials “WS” in an angled Roman font, most probably for William Sudell of 3 Monkwell Street, London.

See Arthur G. Grimwade London Goldsmiths 1697 - 1837 Their Marks and Lives pages 234 numbers 3310 and 3311 for this maker’s marks, and pages 673 and 673 for details of William Sudell’s life and work.
