This painting was originally purchased at a charity sale.
If you have ever been to\"The Oakland Museum of California\", you may have seen Gordon Cook\'s paintings. He is a well documented artist and is listed in at least 8major art reference books.
This painting islarger than many paintings that I have seen by Cook. Personally, I like Cook\'s paintings that havevibrant colors and more complex compositions. Many of his still lifes often depictone object,with monochrome colors.
The question is...would you want a painting that depicts one piece of fruit... or a painting that depicts a table with several pieces of fruit and a drinkingvessel? For most of us, the answer is obvious.
This finely detailed painting has a good composition. Using his unique and very identifiablecombinations of \"hot\" and \"cool\" colors, Cook created a sublime effect throughout the painting. This is an excellent example of Cook\'s ability to take an ordinary subject matter and make it extraordinary.
If you are unfamiliar with Gordon Cook, I would like to share his biography from \"AskART\" with you:
BIOGRAPHY:
\"A painter and printmaker, Gordon Cook became active in the Bay Area California art scene from the time he was married to abstract painter Joan Brown in the 1970s. In fact, Brown painted a portrait of the two of them posed with their dog in the formal garden of the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House.
His early paintings were small in size, muted in color, and usually depicted single still-life subjects such as a box, a single flower or a wheel. These works were both very defined and quite expressive with impasto paint application.
Before then, his reputation was for printmaking, and after the 1970s, his focus turned to landscape painting, especially solitary buildings in the delta area of the Sacramento River. Cook has also painted floral still lifes, nudes, portraits and cityscapes.
Cook was born in Chicago and attended Illinois Wesleyan University, earning a B.F.A. in 1950; He also attended the State University of Iowa in Iowa City.
His work is in the collection of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.

This unframedlarge oil on canvas measures 25\" by 30\". The painting is signed byCook, on the lower left. \"Cook\" is also written on the stretcher two times.Please note that Cook usually signed his paintings \"Gordon Cook\". However, he did occasionally sign his paintings \"G. Cook\", like this one. If you have any doubts about this signature or the painting, I must ask you to refrain from participating in this sale.
Better documented artists, like Salvador Dali and Picasso, have 419 and 255 documented signatures on findartinfo.com. This doesn\'t mean 418 and 254 of their documented signatures are incorrect, it just means they are muchbetter documented artists than Cook.
The painting has very minor, stable crazing on the top quarter of the painting. Otherwise, the paintingis in good, overall condition. It does have a considerable amount of surface dirt (primarily onlyvisible under the UV light)and a cleaning is recommended.
When examining the painting under the ultraviolet light, I did notfindevidence of inpainting. The signature is original to the painting and it did not flouresce under the ultraviolet light.
This is one of Gordon Cook\'s larger oil paintings. Knowing that much of his work is in several important collections,I anticipate that this painting will also end up in an important collection.Good luck on becoming the winning buyer of this still lifeoil painting by Gordon Cook.
