MAGNIFICENT JAPANESE BYOBU, 7 SENNINFOLDING SCREEN
Edo Period Masterpiece, School of Soga Shohaku (1730-1781)
Rare and Important, Museum Quality

ExquisiteJapanesesix panel folding screen, representing the epitome of Shogun era aesthetic. Exceptionally well depicted Sennin, or Japanese Immortals, individually renderedwith sublime artistry. Masterful brushworkexhibiting a sublime balance of bold lines and subtle washes. Harmonious composition with detailed figures in sumptuous robes, each with their own unique accoutrements and attributes.

Soga Shohaku was one of the Edo Period\'s most famous painters, known for his monochrome portraits of mythological characters. He, and his circle, created some of the most fantastic scrolls and screens of the 1700s. We have conservatively attributed this folding screen to his school, however it could be by his own hand. The brushwork is of rare andhighly developed quality. The screen is of significant size, measuring approximately 68 inches high and over 12 feet long when extended flat as a wall hanging. Displayed standing and partially folded, length is determinedby the degreeto whichthese screens are opened, making them highly versatile works of art. When folded closed for storage or shipment, the screen measures approximately 25.25 inches wide by 68 inches high by 4.25 inches thick. Would have originallybeen displayed inalarge homeor castleof a wealthy Samurai familyor member ofthe Daimyo aristocracy during theEdo Period of the late 1700s.Utilized as a room divider to block drafts in the massive open spaces at a time when there was no central heating, or exhibited along the long walls ofa gathering hall where important guests were entertained.

Theimages are exquisitely rendered in ink and mounted upon a gilt paper ground, within a border of silk brocade, framed inwood, and backed withheavy paper.Cultivated images of the seven Sennin include two that we readily identify as Gama Sennin and his three legged toad, and Chokaro producing a horse from his gourd, all surrounded by minute details which reveal themselves the longer one looks at this magnificent screen. Rolling Hokusai style waves, roaring wind, unfurled scrolls, and the full moon behind branches of bamboo. Too much to list, see photos for all of the wonderful detail. One of the finest screens that we have ever offered.

The screenexhibits occasional scattered wear commensurate with age,as iscommonly found on Edo period Byobu. Some museumselect torestore, howevermanyprefer the natural aged state and patina. We would choose the latter in this case as the screen currently displays in spectacular fashion.Byobu related to Soga Shohaku rarely come on the open market. An extraordinary opportunity to own an importantSamurai era treasure. Would make an exquisite centerpiece for museum acquisition, or the most discriminating collector of world classAsian antiques.
