SUPERB LARGE CHINESE ANTIQUE HARDWOOD CARVING OF \'NINE DRAGONS\' W FLAMING PEARL:

For sale we have here a fabulous and large antique Chinese carving in hardwood of a grouping of nine dragons including one huge one and eight more climbing all around with a centered rising flaming pearl of wisdom. This carving was produced in China sometime between the 1940s to the 1960s or 50 to 70 years old. I sold this carving about 15 years ago to a collector and recently I was offered this and some other items to buy back from the same collector and I had forgotten actually how nice this large carving was. Now, I have seen a number of pieces on the market that are similar and perhaps maybe 20 to 30 years old but this particular one is a fabulous work of art and the ones I have seen are just more for decoration as the quality of the carving is very basic and almost crude. The largest dragon runs the entire length and is so long that both the fanned out tail and the dragons head wrap around to the front having wonderfulscaling, feet, tail and face with the rest of the dragons showing all the same details with a large and impressive flaming pearl on the top center. The details on this piece are simply fabulous for such a large carving and the amount of time must have been great even for the talented carvers as the large dragon has hundreds of individual scales and there are nine dragons that received the same treatment and the tails are also splendid. The type of wood may be a species of rosewood or another similar hardwood as the color is of a mellow butterscotch tone with not being overly finished or lacquered as the surfaces are starting to show good age and patina. The finial or in this case would be the flaming pearl is removable and is a good size chunk of wood nicely carved as well with the actual pearl having more attention to the details on the front side than the back side and it also appears to stand on a grouping of clouds. Condition overall is excellent as there are no chips, losses, damage or repairs all there is are some long horizontal shrinkage/age splits that basically run just above the bottom across the front which actually I think that it is just one split that and that is really is very little beings that the size and all the openwork lends itself to these types of age related splits but it does not detract in any way from the overall greatness of the piece. Sizes: Length 26\" x Depth 6\" x Height 17-1/2\" (to top of the flames on the pearl) x Weight 13lbs. This would make a impressive statement in any area it is put and I highlyrecommend this Chinese work of art to anyone looking for a special larger piece!
