SUPERB RARE 1860 LINCOLN HAMLIN DOUBLE FERROTYPE BADGE JUGATE FREE SOIL FREE MEN:
$895.00

Presented for the collector of Lincolniana or one desirous of obtaining a historical memento of perhaps the most pivotal presidential campaign in our history that was followed closely by the division of a nation and the deaths of hundreds of thousands is this fine campaign ferrotype. This campaign ferrotype from the 1860 presidential campaign features back-to-back ferrotype (tintype) images of Republican party candidates Abraham Lincoln and his running mate Hannibal Hamlin. Of course, the Republican ticket carried the day in 1860 and both Lincoln and Hamlin would go on to serve as President and Vice President respectively. While technically not a jugate, this badge or, more accurately, medalette features ferrotype copies of portraits of both men enclosed within a two-piece shell or frame of stamped brass. The medalette measures 1 3/32 inches in diameter and is about 1/8 of an inch thick. The overall condition of the medalette is superb and it exhibits a light, untouched patina. The brass is still relatively bright, especially in the recesses. This indicates that this piece was tucked away for well over a century in ideal conditions. There are several die variations of this genre of Lincoln campaign medalette. This one bears the very desirable \"FREE SOIL & FREE MEN\" slogan below \"ABRAHAM LINCOLN\" on the Lincoln or obverse side while the slogan \"FREE SPEECH\" underscores the portrait and name of \"HANNIBAL HAMLIN\" on the reverse. These slogans are evocative of the most important issue during this election and subsequent 4 years of Lincoln\'s first term: the question of slavery and its potential expansion into new territories or states. The Lincoln image is perfect and is free from any flaking or emulsion loss. The image is slightly dark, but that is just how the emulsion set up on this particular piece. Ferrotype photography was not an exact science insofar as results were concerned. The Hamlin image is also excellent and is also free from flaking, scratches, or loss to the emulsion. The line on Hamlin\'s brow is an \"in-manufacture\" flaw in the flow of the emulsion in this particular image. It\'s been that way since 1860 and is a common occurrence with these ferrotypes. The hole is nicely punched and the two-piece brass shell is nicely crimped and tight. This one is a screamer and would compliment any collection of political/presidential memorabilia or Americana. If you can only afford one piece of vintage Lincoln campaign ephemera, this one would be hard to beat. ! Please see my other listings for items which may interest you. Good luck!
