RARE antique BRONZE Chinese Dragon door knocker
Hi and welcome to my listing for this antique bronze Chinese Dragon. I purchased this piece from a former, now retired, Estate Agent in France who told me he purchased it from the estate of the Chateau, along with some other pieces.
The history of the estate goes back to the middle ages. It existed originally as a farmhouse dependent on the seigniorial of Pounance - in the 16th century there is a mention of a sheet mill on the site and then later a forge and the lands belonged to the Lords of Pounance.
In 1809 a journalist/politician Etienne Antoine Feuillant bought the castle of Pounance and its estates from the heirs of the Duc de Villeroy. In 1818 the estate was bought by the Marquis de Preaulx the castle was demolished and a new one commissioned in 1845 by Joseph-Marthe, Marquis de Preaulx it was completed in 1848. It is from this period or possibly earlier that i was told that the Dragon originates as part of the Marquises collection.
From 1921 to 1935 the estate became the property of the Marquis de Montault then on to Industrialist Henri Maillard until 1948 becoming a preventorium for children and departmental sanatorium until 2013 new owners purchased the property in 2016.
The Dragon is bronze measuring about 10 inches long and standing almost 6 inches high. It is beautifully cast with lovely detailing. It has a cast bronze hole at the front just underneath the neck as though it slotted onto a bracket for a door knocker and the end of the tail is missing/flattened to hit the striker plate even as a stand alone piece it is very striking with a lovely patina
so although the hanging bracket and striker are missing and it will require some work this is rare and unusual piece and restored and placed in the right Environment it would be a quite stunning addition
