A superb book of naval Flags of the World, finely drawn in pen and watercolour, produced in Britain c.1800
Opening with a full-page watercolour of a sailor holding the British Royal Standard, followed by 208 naval Flags on thirteen leaves, the Flags finely drawn in ink and watercolour in groups of sixteen to a page, each page of Flags with an adjacent page of manuscript text listing the Flags depicted.
Comprising 28 leaves of laid paper without watermark, later endpapers, contained in a sympathetic modern binding of half-calf over marble boards, with a central calf title-panel to the upper cover reading \"A Display of the Naval Flags of all Nations collected from the Best Authorities\".
Size (when closed): 23.3 x 18.7 cm
Manuscript books of Flags of this quality are extremely rare on the market, it may well have been the reference book of a naval officer.
