Finely Engraved Original Antique Map of Surrey, Roper & Cole, 1808

An attractive and detailed, hand coloured, copper engraved county map of Surrey with a reference to the Hundreds , an explanatory key to symbols used for Villages, Towns, Mail Coach Roads, Ancient Encampments etc. The map area extends into Westminster & central London and is further enhanced by original, full wash hand colouring. Engraved by J.Roper after G.Cole and published by Vernor, Hood & Sharpe London 1808 for" The British Atlas".Image size approx.9" x 7" (230mm x 180mm) map area only with excellent wide margins beyond for framing. A generally VG+ clean impression.

Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach and principal roads, sites of Roman and other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility and the gentry, and market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive.

Terms of Sale:Should your item not arrive within the normal delivery time period specified please allow a couple more days for postal delays and then e-mail us at the address above. Parcels are occasionally delayed in the postal system for a variety of reasons and can arrive a few days late, though from my experience Royal Mail are very reliable.
