Noble cheetah…by Jacobo & Maria AngelesSALE - Older stock
Oaxacan wood carvings, often called \"alebrijes\", (al-ah-bree-hayz), are a new and unique art form that originated in Oaxaca, Mexico around 40-50 years ago and are gradually becoming known and collected throughout the world. The extraordinary movie, \"COCO\", which featured alebrijes, has now introduced these amazing spirit-animals to millions of people. The first alebrijes came about in the 1930\'s, with the Mexican papermache artist, Pedro Linares, making figures from his dreams - and he called them \"alebrijes\". Then in the 1970\"s Manuel Jimenez, a wood carver from Oaxaca began replicating these colorful creatures that were full of personality as carved and painted wooden figures. As the popularity of these figures spread, many other people in Manuel\'s village and other nearby villages began making them. Todayapproximately 200 families in the Oaxaca Valley are making these fantastic wood carvings. I am honored to be one of a handful of people that have been involved with these families and offering their wonderful alebrije carvings for over 20 years.
This handsome cheetah was hand carved from a single piece of copal wood by Jacobo Angeles of Oaxaca, Mexico and expertly painted by his wife, Maria Mendoza. They are Oaxaca\'s most prolific wood artists and their distinctive figures are sought after by collectors throughout the world. Maria\'s delicate painting of intricate indiginous designs has been copied by dozens of other wood carving families in Oaxaca but none of them can duplicate her masterful work. The cheetah was painted in earthy browns and greens for the most part, with a bit of golden yellow included to giving it some added pizzaz. I really like the way Jacobo and Maria have modernized this figure, in both the style of the carving and painting of Escher-like designs on it\'s back and haunches. The cheetah is 9 3/4\" high, 5 1/4\" deep and 5\" wide and a Certificate of Authenticity is included in the package.Shipping and handling are included in the price of the figure, not an additional charge, and the carving will be sent to you by priority mail. Payment needs to be made through PayPal and I will ship your carving within 24 hours of receiving payment. Note - If your purchase is going to be shipped to California, I must charge sales tax also.
