Author of Understanding Roseville PotterySalem China Primitive, Designed Viktor Schreckengost MCM 1950s, Eames EraThis pair of Salem China 10.25\" dinner plates are examples of \"Cleveland School\" designer Viktor Schreckengost\'s great work in ceramics. The shape family is called Free Form, introduced in 1955, and the decoration is called Primitive. In the catalog for the major retrospective 2000 exhibition at the Cleveland Museum Art, called Viktor Schreckengost and 20th-Century Design, Henry Adams writes: \"Viktor\'s last major design of the 1950s, the Free Form shape of 1955, was one of his most pleasing and original designs, and a high point of his career. As the name suggests, all the pieces were free flowing and unusual in form, with a biomorphic fluidity somewhat different from his earlier work … First rather than having attached handles, in one way or another the handles and grips form an integral part of the form … The creamer, for example, has indented thumb and finger grips on either side rather than handles … In addition, … all the hollowware shapes rest on tripod supports, creating visual interest …\" (113-114).In the 2006 centennial exhibition catalog, called Viktor Schreckengost: American da Vinci, I myself wrote about Primitive: \"The Primitive decal designs involve stylized \'cavemen,\' a series of stick figures whose attentuated XY otlines represent the speed of the hunt, and a \'family\' of male and female elk who congregate, unmolested, nearby. Reminiscent of the pigments found on antique Anasazi or Pueblo pottery, Vik\'s choices for Primitive were rust and charcoal, which he used on a background resembling nutmeg sprinkled over cream\" (29).These two plates do have condition issues. One has circular crazing marks from years of enjoyment (use), so this might be called a type of wear, instead of being a manufacturing flaw. The other plate has a tight hairline running 4 or 5\" from one rim toward the center. The latter might be ok for display purposes, and of course you could easily serve on the other example without any worries.PLEASE if you have questions, please email me. Phone is [phone removed by ].
