A Sampson Mordan & Co Solid Silver Small Hatching Chick Pin Cushion

Hallmarked Chester 1906 & in Stunning Condition

This is a miniature silverpin cushion in the form of a hatching baby chick emerging from its egg. The silver is fully hallmarked on the base of the pin cushion confirming it was assayed in Chester in 1906 (please see second photograph). The hallmark also includes the maker\'s mark \'SM & Co\' forSampson Mordan & Co, who are regarded as the most desirable manufacturer of pin cushions, etc in the Victorian/Edwardian period.

The Sampson Mordan Chick is a design classic, which they made in a number of sizes and this is the smallest and most beautiful in my opinion. This delightful pin cushion is a superb example and measures approximately 22mm or 2.2cm high; it weighs 9.4 grams.

Overall theconditionof this fine piece isextremelygood for an antique pin cushion that is 107 years old. It does have signs of wear to the surface commensuratewith age and use and a couple of tiny bruises that do not detract from thebeautyof this superb pin cushion. Although I cannot be certain it may have its original pin cushion judging by the colour and wear to the cloth but I will leave you to look at the photographs and make your own mind up.

In summary a particularly nice example of this highly collectable and much sought after pin cushion by Sampson Mordan & Co.
