Samuel Adams Document Signed as Acting Governor of Massachusetts:
$2750.00

American statesman (1722–1803) and signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts who was one of the organizers of the Boston Tea Party and one of his state\'s most ardent supporters of the patriotic cause.

Partly-printed document signed (DS) \"Samuel Adams\" as Acting Governor of Massachusetts, one page, 10.5x17, headed \"Commonwealth of Massachusetts\" February 25, 1794. An impressive judicial appointment naming \"Jonathan Whetcomb of Bolton...to be one of the Justices to keep the Peace in our County of Worcester...\" for a term of seven years.  Countersigned by John Avery, as Massachusetts secretary of the commonwealth. Docketed on the verso. Adams\' signature is at upper left, just beneath a blind-embossed seal of the commonwealth.

On October 8, 1793, Governor John Hancock passed away, and Adams, who was lieutenant governor at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. He was elected to his own term on April 7, 1794. He won reelection to a second term in 1795, and to a third term in 1796. During his tenure, he worked to establish and form the separate powers between state and federal government. After completing his term, Adams left office on June 2, 1797, and retired from public service. Governor Samuel Adams passed away on October 2, 1803.  It is interesting to note that the printed document was amended in several spots to indicate that Adams was serving as Acting Governor and not yet as the official Governor (His \"Excellency\" is amended to His \"Honor\" and \"Lieutenant\" is added before Governor).

A remarkable and desirable piece of Commonwealth history from a leader of the movement that became the American Revolution.

Folds are weak with some separation; old tape repairs on the verso.
