Unsigned, handwritten six-stanza poem Freedom's Home by author Sarah J. Hale. She is the author of Mary Had a Little Lamb and edited Godey's Lady's Book, the most popular women's magazine of its time. Handwritten poems by Hale are extremely rare!
Autograph poem unsigned. 2 pages, 6½x8, 1 sheet, front and verso. Titled: "Freedom's Home". Six-stanza, 24-line poem. Author and editor Hale (1788-1879), née Sarah Josepha Buell, became editor of Lady's Book (later called Godey's Lady's Book) in 1837; she turned the magazine into the most influential and popular women's magazine in the U. S. She had previously, from 1828, edited Ladies' Magazine (known as American Ladies' Magazine from 1834). In 1830, Hale published Poems for Our Children, which contained one of her most famous poems, Mary Had a Little Lamb. Lightly toned, soiled stained and creased. Show-through touches poem on both sides. Light tears at right edge. Folded twice vertically and four times horizontally. Otherwise in fine condition.
