Small octavo (approximately 7 inches tall). Uncut in the original boards.Stained and worn, but still a very good copy. Initials and date (or price) on the front free endpaper. Original linen back is splitting at rear joint.Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (1788-1879) was an American writer and important editor for her era. She is well-known as the author of the nursery rhyme \"Mary had a little lamb\" and worked tirelessly to make Thanksgiving into a national holiday and day of remembrance (before it was mostly observed in New England only). Her first novel was Northwood published in 1827, and later she moved to Boston to become the Editor of The Lady\'s Magazine; and subsequently edited Godey\'s Lady\'s Book for 40 years.
