An impressive last quarter of the19th century porcelain group marked with the gold anchor of Chelsea depicting Europa as a queen with the bull personifying Zeus/Jupiter. You remember that the god brought her over the seas from her native Phoenicia to Creta where she gave birth to Minos and two other sons.The style and the high quality of the painting with the delicate flowers spread on the tunic, the colors, the baroque shape of the plinth are typical of 18th century Chelsea and Bow figurines : it is in fact a highly qualitative production by Edme Samson in Paris, ca. 1880, inspired or after an unknown english model of Chelsea.The porcelain is extremely white and perfectly glazed with multiple thin colored shadow areas even in places difficult to reach (within the shell behind her left leg for example).Europe stands in a large shell shaped behind her as a wave, on a base covered with sea vegetal plants, leaves, blossoms and colored shells.Extremely interesting is the bull : his horns are gilt, which is classical, but his body ends with a fish tail, which is absolutely unusual in the classical iconography : a few samples are available from antique greek vases or on a roman mosaic (Gaziantep Archeological Museum).Surprisingly and as far as I could check, this group is not documented.
The statue shows minor damages at close inspection : the very low end of the sceptre is probably missing, the tip of the right thumb and forefinger are missing too. The very end of the right horn of the bull is lost. Among the blossoms, I could count seven missing parts. Please check the pictures or request a new count if you consider this point as a key issue.Main parts as the right arm and hand, the feet, the large wavy veil on the back, etc. are perfect. An admirable object of art.
The imited Chelsea gold anchor mark is painted on the upper right side near the rim of the base. An incised mark under the base reads \"225 S\", a blue underglaze dot.Packing will be extremely safe and thoughtful.
