This offering is for one (1) pre-owned Sears Kenmore Model 148.281 (Model 28) straight stitch, oscillating hook sewing machine. Serial number 02061. It looks like a ¾ size sewing machine to me. The base measures 12”x 6 ½” but with the hand wheel extending past the base by 2” for an overall length of about 14”. At any rate it is noticeably smaller than the average machine. I believe it dates to about 1965 or so. It is in excellent condition both cosmetically and functionally. It looks as though it has never been used or at least little used. It is a lilac color (or some shade of gray) with chrome accents. It is a cast iron machine and weighs about 30 pounds. There are no plastic or nylon gears in this machine. Japanese made machines like this are every bit as good as the Singer models they emulate. The working innards appear to me as essentially copies of Singer machines with some improvements such as the chrome or nickel plating on the moving parts as in this one.

Included in this offering is one (1) Sears Model 148.281 machine serial number 02061, one (1) power cord/foot pedal combination, one (1) original bobbin case, one (1) metal bobbin, and one (1) straight stitch presser foot. An owners manual on a cd is also included. This machine uses the low shank feet which are readily available. You can buy individual complete presser feet, or you can purchase a quick release adaptor and different soles thus relieving you of having to unscrew the thumbscrew every time you change a foot. As I mentioned, I have made a video showing the basic functions and capabilities of the machine. Some of the items I sew are not materials listed in the owners’ manual. The intent is to show that heavier materials can be sewn with this machine but I make no claim that you should sew them on a regular basis; or ever. I have seen claims that these machines are “industrial strength” but they were designed and sold as household machines. But, compared to todays’ machines. Well?

I pack well. Two double walled boxes are sandwiched together to make a 4 walled box. Currently I wrap the machine in large bubble wrap until it is wide enough to fill the box which is roughly 25“x21“x16“. Then I fill the voids with Styrofoam peanuts. Even though the box will come with much tape on the outside, the closing is done using contact cement to add rigidity to the package. The packing method may vary from the above described method depending on the availability of materials.
