Second1860s Counter Balance Candle Holder, Gilded Clay Ball at Bottom.Red Candle.

I cannot cover complete history of lighting a tree by candles in one paragraph. But at a glance, first rope candles warmed and wrapped around branches. Then thicker candles stuck on tree with pins, and then holders... pin type and then always problems with bending branches, and possible fires. So, in 1867 a patent was taken out for counterbalance candle holders which would have a weight at bottom, thus make it more safe to use on trees. These are such very early examples, with clay ball weights at bottom, gilded gold to make it appear as an ornament with the holder itself. After Counter weight holders, eventually pinch-on holders which went at the tips of branches. And the ultimate, \"E Holders\" which would weave into the outermost part of the branch, and the candle would extend outwards more away from the tree itself.

I am old, when in grade school, my grandparents still used candles on the tree, as it was a tradition, and they still did not trust electricity for the tree. Too dangerous, my grandpa always said. Their tree was in the unheated parlor in the back of the house, and it was so cold in there, but I can remember those trees today after all these decades. My grandpa lit the candles, we looked on in awe, and then they were extinguished before they burned too low. (of course, always a farm pail of water there as well.) Now, I turn on the lights of the tree, and they are on sometimes all day, and most of the evening. We are spoiled. We no longer just stare at the tree. At least, I do not, as when I was young, as the magic was very ephemeral, and I did not want to miss anything. Enough.. sorry for going on.
