This is a letter from John W. Foster.
John Watson Foster (1836-1917) was an American diplomat, lawyer,
and military officer, who is best known for having been Secretary of State
under President Benjamin Harrison. Foster served as a colonel in the Union
army during the Civil War. After the war, he was appointed Ambassador to
Mexico by President Grant. He was later appointed Ambassador to Russia
by President Garfield, and Ambassador to Spain by President Arthur. In later
years he returned to private practice as a lawyer, and became an early lobbyist
for corporations seeking favors from Washington, as well as engaging in
various diplomatic negotiations on a part-time basis.
Foster was the grandfather of two famous men: John Foster Dulles, who was
Secretary of State under President Eisenhower, and Allen W. Dulles, who was
Director of the CIA from 1953 to 1961.

in San Francisco. Hart was also the author of many books, including several
volumes of translations of Chinese literature. The letter contains Foster\'s advice to Hart on how to obtain a diplomatic post.
The letter is 10.5\" by 8\". It is in very good condition, with creases where it has been folded.Also included is the original envelope in which the letter was mailed.The envelope is postmarked 12:30 PM, January 11, 1911. Foster\'s address is printed on the top left corner. Henry H. Hart\'s address
