This rug was purchased by the original owner inIran in the 1960s during the reign of the Shah. The seller was informed thatthis particular pattern was no longer exported from Iran after the Khomeinirevolution. This makes it an extremely unique and rare item of its kind. The seller is not an oriental rug dealer, buta private party who has had many admirers of this rug.

The rug is knotted of 100% lambs\' wool (kork) on asilk foundation. Rugs from the city ofIsfahan have a tradition of exceptional quality and workmanship dating back tothe Safavid dynasty of the Persian empire in the sixteenth century. This rug has been finely knotted of\"senneh\" knotting technique, which is widely used in the central partof Iran. There are roughly 500 knots persquare inch, which amount to about 1.9 million knots. The central figure is a pictorial motif of aman playing a Persian instrument (setar) and a dancing woman with a gardenscene in the background. The bordershows some of the historical monuments and mosques in the cities of Isfahan andShiraz. The predominant colors in therug are blue and beige. Other colorsinclude shades of red, mauve, and ivory.Close to the bottom fringe is the name of the weaver (Tariakchi), whichwas woven into the rug as a signature and isshown in the second photograph above, alongwith Iran and Isfahan are also woven into the rug.The body of the rug is 4\' 3\" x 6\' 3\". The top fringe adds 5\" and the bottomfringe 4\". This rug is in excellentcondition.
