A BRIEF HISTORY OF STEREOSCOPY:

The Stereoscope and its box of view cards were found in almost every American parlor. From the 1850s until after World War I, the stereoscope allowed our forefathers to visit every corner of the United States and much of the world.

The principles of 3-D were known to the ancient Greeks. The first stereoscope viewer was a result of experiments performed by Sir Charles Wheatstone in about 1833. These were done with drawings before the advent of photography.

HOW IT WORKS - Stereoviews are taken with a special camera which has dual lenses and shutters. Both pictures are taken at the same time. The lenses are about 2.5 inches apart, about the same distance as between your eyes, which enables the lenses to record a scene just as your eyes see it - from two different viewpoints.

As a result, although the two pictures appear to be the same, they are not.  Each picture is minutely - but completely different. All objects in the picture are actually seen in different relations to the others.

As you look into the viewer, each eye sees only what it would see if you were viewing a real scene. The image fills the lens due to magnification and because the lenses are prisms as well as magnifiers, they help to move the picture together. Your eyes blend the view and the brain perceives it with the objects standing out in space in real-life perspective.
