RARE Oklahoma postcard, shows a canvas top tent with rough wood plank walls with a stove pipe sticking out the side, sign reads \"Temporary Quarters The Citizens Bank of Shamrock\". Real photo, unused AZO 4 triangles point up in corners of stamp box, est. 1910. Condition is very good, sharp focus. I consider this postcard to be very RARE, both in subject matter and location. Believe it to be a very well done amateur photograph since not photographer credit. Shamrock is an unincorporated place in Creek County and had a 2010 Census population of 101 people. Shamrock is 6 miles south of Drumright, 15 miles southeast of Cushing, 15 miles north of Stroud, 15 miles northwest of Bristow, and 18 miles northwest of Depew.

The history of early Shamrockis available on the web page of legendsofamerica. I have summarized it for you here. Shamrock Oklahoma is an example of an oil “boom and bust” town. It was established in July 1910 and by 1913the town supported 2 general stores, a restaurant and had a population of 35people. In 1915 the nearby Cushing OilField was developed and the town site shifted to the southern edge of the oilfield. Oil camps named Dropright,Gasright, Allright, Downrigth, Damright and Justright sprung up in thevicinity. The town of Cushing is 15 miles northwest of Shamrock and also boomed in1915. Drumright was established just 6miles north of Shamrock. There were 23refineries in the area. By 1919 theCushing-Drumright area produced 17% of the US oil. Thepopulation of Shamrock grew to 10,000 during this boom. The mid-1920s saw the beginning of thedecline of Shamrock as folks moved to new boomtowns and by 1930 the populationhad fallen to 700 people. It was back inthe headlines briefly in 1932 when the bank was robbed by Pretty Boy Floyd. Floyd had also been casing the bank in Depewbut did not rob it. Today it is nearly aghost town with about 100 people living in Shamrock. It is about 40 miles from Tulsa and 40 miles from Stillwater.
