This sale is for a signed \"Golden Age\" Japanese bulbous-shaped, black cloissone vase with silver wires showing a dragon motif.
This is one of two vases which will be up for sale. The second vase, a mirror image of this vase is shown in the last picture posted in this sale. This sale however, is ONLY FOR ONE vase, the one on the left of the picture of the pair and is the vase with the dragon facing to the right. The second vase of the pair will be up for sale once the sale for this first vase is completed so please watch out for the upcoming second sale.
The signature has been identified as Hayashi Yojiro and is clearly shown on the bottom of the vase.
The use of black enamel was thought to be impossible for many years and this vase is an early example of the difficult technique required to create black enamel.
The vase is 6 inches high and is in excellent overall condition considering the age of this gorgeous piece. The vase shows normal firing-related enamel imperfections as noted in the pictures. There are no dings in the enamel or top or bottom of the vase.
The shape of the vase is a rarer bulbous form that is more aesthetically pleasing.
The scene on the vase depicts a long open-mouthed dragon that snakes entirely around the top of the bulbous part of the vase. The dragon faces to the right.The vase (and its mate) were given to the grandfather of the original owner by his Japanese business clients. The grandfather had a business that had dealings in Japan and one of his clients gave him this vase and others (which we will also be listing at a later date) as gifts.
