Signed Jim (Rowland) Johnson Bowl (Bauer Pottery) Matt Carlton:
$695.00

For sale is the rarest ofrares - a signed, hand painted experimental bowl made by Jim (Rowland) Johnson(also known as James Cartwright Johnson and James Maurice Johnson) in 1938. Ifyou are into Bauer Pottery, then you know who Jim Johnson, his father Fred LeeJohnson, as well as his uncle Matt Carlton are. Until this bowl was discoveredit was thought that Jim NEVER signed anything outside of Bauer. I haveconfirmed with Jim’s daughter Brenda that this bowl was in fact made by herfather Jim. Brenda herself is a Bauer authority, having grown up in a familydedicated to Bauer and Niloak Pottery and having written the book “BREAKINGBAUER…..Myths.” Included in the sale of this bowl is an email from Brendaconfirming the authenticity of the bowl. Brenda and I have exchanged numerousemails discussing the details of this bowl. Part of the included letterreferencing the bowl in this sale are as follows:

“I have examined all thephotos you provided regarding the hand-painted blue/green,
unmarked (no Bauer incision) yet signed bowl. It is hand signed “Jim Johnson, 1938”. This is a molded item, but is a one-of-a-kind piece by my father,James R. “Jim/Jimmy” Johnson. He wasemployed at J.A. Bauer from March 1, 1936 to its final closing March 1964, atwhich time he was the last to step foot within the pottery.”

Brenda thinks that herfather threw this experimental piece at one of the “Laguna Art Festivals” (alsoknown as “The Laguna Beach Exhibition”) located on the grounds of “The PotteryShack” which opened in 1936 (now known as “The Old Pottery Place”).

The bowl is just under 8inches in diameter at the top rim, 3-1/2 inches diameter at the base, and 1-3/4inches high. I am not a pottery expert. Brenda mentions above that the handpainted color combination as \"blue/green\", but please note that it ismore of a black/green combination. With regard to the shape of this piece, ithas three small chips on the bottom side of the upper lip of the bowl. This canbe seen in one of the images. As stated, due to their location they are hardlynoticeable at all from the front of the bowl itself. Brenda herself has statedonline that “Chips, ifnot too large, are acceptable though they may detract fromthe appearancebutshould devalue only to some degree.” Fortunatelyfor this bowl and its future owner this is exactly the case with the chipsbarely visible from the front.
