\"....His 50 years of artistic life began in 1962 when he enrolled in the sculpture school of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, which was then under the guidance of a certain?Jean-Julien Bourgault.

Born November 15, 1944 in Causapscal in the Matapédia Valley, Denys Heppell was 17 years old when he left the family home and ended up in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.He had always known that he would become a sculptor: \"Official version for my parents: I was going to study cabinetmaking in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli!Because if I had told them that I wanted to become a sculptor, they would not let me go, \"he laughs.

Barely returned to school, she was asked to carve a bird.A few days later, a tourist bought his room spread among so many others: \"That\'s when I decided to stay in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, a village with which I had fallen. love\".

Fifty years later, we can say that he had a prolific career. His works, in wood, metal, fiberglass or polyurethane, are found today on five continents.

Whether in relief or roundabout, the artist addressed several themes along the way: animals, folk and contemporary scenes, religious art, portraiture, caricature and functional sculpture, not to mention the design and applied research in design.

Over the years he has taught privately or in various institutions. He has also participated in numerous exhibitions and is part of several associations or groups. When he sat on the Board of Directors of the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli Artisan Association, the organization had 125 members: \"There was incredible skill and dexterity in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.The talent came from everywhere to settle here. The number of people who lived their art was really exceptional.
Today, there are fewer wood carvers in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.But according to Denys Heppell, the succession is there, different and diversified. As for him, he has no intention of stopping and will continue to surprise the public by moving from one realistic work to another with a more stylized look.\"
